We finally made a Morta Devil Anse, and it's pretty awesome. For those who don't know, Bog Oak, often referred to as Morta, is wood that comes from tree trunks that have been underwater for hundreds or thousands of years. The minerals and iron in the water combine with the tannins in the wood, darkening it to an almost black color. It's rare, expensive, and it's really cool. The Morta we used for these pipes comes from Ukraine and has been dated to over 5000 years old. We finish the wood with a light sandblast to feature the unique grain patterns and texture. It's a great alternative to using briar, and smokes fantastically.
Originally a factory shape from the early days of briar pipes, the Devil Anse shape found a new name and popularity in recent years due to its appearance as the favorite pipe of Devil Anse Hatfield in the History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. It's a charming, stylish, and compact shape that works equally well at home or on the go. The Moonshine Devil Anse was designed to capture the size and style of the pipe from Hatfields & McCoys and has quickly become one of our most popular shapes.
